Software – Monetization vs Progress

There has been no significant improvement in productivity when all is summed up in most commonly used IT tools in the last 25 years. I am talking about email, file system and management, electronic calendars, etc.

Mostly it’s monetization, ecosystems and walled gardens. Email used to be independently distributed among a million Apache servers. Now it’s centralized among a few. So is search. So are even calendars and notes.

Monetizing is only possible if people are made to believe that the centralized good looking tools increase their productivity, yet that is a lie and a lie dearly paid for by yearly subscription of SAS agreements. No wonder it worked when so much money was involved.

People like change, need change and if packaged properly will pay for change any day foe the sake of it alone.
